Why I Fight | Nicole Schultz

September 7, 2019 | Nicole Schultz

What’s your name, where are you from, and what do you do?

My name is Nicole Schultz. I was born in Orange County, CA, but grew up in Reno, NV. I am a doctoral student at Tufts University.

What makes you a fighter?

In the literal sense, I grew up studying Tae Kwon Do. When I moved to Boston, I began practicing Muay Thai, and recently began learning the art of boxing, thanks to EBF. But the physical practice of martial arts is not what makes me, or anyone, a fighter. To me, being a fighter is a mindset — always seeing the glass half full regardless of the challenges we face along life’s journey.

What do you fight for?

I fight for inspiration, connection and joy. I fight to inspire others to fight for themselves — to dig deep, find their purpose and true happiness, and then fight for it. Martial arts has not only given me some of my closest friends, but it led me to teaching fitness, which has served as a way for me to reach, inspire and connect with others. In doing so, I’ve met amazing people who in turn inspire me.

What inspires you to take the hits and keep on fighting?

Learning, growing and fighting it forward. Being in the ring requires focus, strength and determination; it forces one to be fully present and literally stay grounded and balanced. These are all ways of being that I aspire to achieve daily — focused, strong, determined, present, grounded and balanced. I learn and grow from each “hit,” both in and out of the ring, which in turn helps me to contribute in a more meaningful way. These moments of learning and growth inspire me to keep on fighting.

If you could fight side-by-side with one person, past or present, who would it be?

Master Ernie Reyes.

What is your Fight Fuel?

Do I have to choose one?! My fight fuel is whole, unprocessed food. But if I’m really being honest, my go-to pre-workout fuel is banana and nut butter!

What is your Fight Song?

I’m Shipping Up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys

What’s your favorite EverybodyFights class?

BAGS!!

Who is your favorite EverybodyFights Trainer, and why?

I am not one to choose favorites, but if you are making me choose, I will choose two! Marty Farrell has a gift of bringing out the fighter in everyone, and he has certainly done that for me. He inspires and motivates me daily. Pat Ceurvels made me feel right at home when I started working at EBF. He shared my love for Muay Thai and was willing to be my kickboxing buddy without asking any questions.

How do you Fight It Forward?

My field of study (nutrition science and public health) has and continues to provide me the knowledge and opportunities to fight it forward in a variety of capacities, including teaching nutrition education and physical activity, both at an organizational level and individual level. I also do my best to incorporate small acts of kindness on a daily basis, even if it’s simply smiling at a stranger on the street and saying hello.
